EurekAlert: It suggests that taller adults tend to have lower levels of plaque, and thus, a lower risk of CHD. This relationship persisted even after accounting for standard cardiovascular risk factors such as age, smoking, high cholesterol, and diabetes.

Magnetic resonance spectroscopy measures heart energy levels; predicts prognosis.
EurekAlert: Johns Hopkins researchers have identified a new way to predict which heart failure patients are likely to see their condition get worse and which ones have a better prognosis. Their study is one of the first to show that energy metabolism within the heart, measured using a noninvasive magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) test, is a significant predictor of clinical outcomes, independent of a patient's symptoms or the strength of the heart's ability to pump blood, known as the ejection fraction.

Merigan Professor and a professor of medicine and of microbiology and immunology. Relman, who is also chief of the infectious disease section at Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System, was the study's senior author. The lead author was Miling Yan, PhD, a graduate student in Relman's lab at the time the experiments were performed.

Long-term use of proton-pump inhibitors linked to vitamin B12 deficiency.
EurekAlert: "Patients who took PPI medications for more than two years had a 65 percent increase in their risk of B12 deficiency," said Douglas A. Corley, MD, PhD, a gastroenterologist and research scientist with the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research. "Higher doses also were associated with an increased risk, compared with lower doses. Kaiser Permanente's electronic health records allowed us to look at what happens in the real world for these commonly used medications."
