NxStage Medical Inc., a medical device maker based in Lawrence, is expanding its business to offer kidney dialysis treatment at clinics in Massachusetts.

Its new centers in Wakefield and Norwood will be its first in Massachusetts, allowing NxStage to market products more directly to patients in Greater Boston and potentially increase its patient base. The company started opening such centers in other states in late 2013.“We’ve been innovating technology for dialysis patients to create more options and more flexibility for them,” said Jeffrey H. Burbank, NxStage chief executive. “We wanted to open some centers to showcase those practices.”Patients with failing kidneys must get dialysis — a treatment given several days a week, for hours at a time — to clean wastes from blood. About 400,000 Americans are on dialysis. NxStage’s centers aid patients who want dialysis at home, as well as offer in-center treatment, pitting the firm against national dialysis operators Fresenius Medical Care of Waltham and DaVita Kidney Care of Denver. “NxStage is not going to open up hundreds of centers and compete with the big guys like DaVita and Fresenius,” said Kevin Ellich, senior research analyst at the Minneapolis investment bank Piper Jaffray. “Their strategy is to provide this additional service to patients who want to do home dialysis or need a little break from doing it at home because it can be a very taxing process.”NxStage, a publicly traded company, is not profitable but expects to report $299 million in revenue for 2014, 14 percent higher than the year before.
